About the Workshop
June 10, 11, 12 2023

Our Maine Photography mission is to help you learn how to create images that you are proud of regardless of your skill level. We have been working our craft for 25 years and have some wonderful lessons for you.  We will supply our one-on-one individual instruction to take you to the next level of photo capture and processing. We host this particular workshop this time of year as all the sea roses are in full bloom.  It is an amazing part of the seasons to do landscape photography.

We will provide guided field instruction at various beautiful, selected locations we have pre-scouted.   We keep the group size small in order to offer each person individual instruction. This is not a photo tour. There will be individual instruction based on your goals and your questions to build your camera skills. There will be structured classroom time in our local studio where we will discuss a range of topics that lead to successful image making and printing.  Workshops are limited to 10 people to maximize individual instruction.

We have chosen the Portland area for all of the wonderful scenes that are offered.  Not only is this area known for its amazing food but there are also so many harbors, beaches and lighthouses to explore. We will explore the beautiful lighthouses, harbors, and beaches in this wonderful area of Maine. Possible shooting locations may include Portland area harbors, Portland Headlight, Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, Bug Light, Pine Point, Old Orchard Beach, Kennebunkport, Nubble Lighthouse. Cost for this workshop is: $850

About the Instructors

Darylann Leonard lives in Western Maine with her husband and four rescue dogs. In addition to working as a landscape photographer, she is also a full-time clinical social worker. Darylann’s experience with helping people through difficult times in their lives has carried over into her vision as a photographer and workshop leader. Darylann believes that not only does photography challenge people as individuals, but through a connection to nature the creative process can allow for inner peace and personal growth. She believes that full immersion in the field combined with photographers coming together, to explore the natural world, … is where the magic truly happens during these workshops.

Darylann is a contributing photographer and workshop leader for Down East Magazine. Her work is on display at Gallery 302 in Bridgton, Full Circle Gallery in Cornish and The Barking Chicken Gallery in Harrison. You can also view her portfolio at: www.darylannleonardphotography.com

Chris Lawrence lives in Scarborough, Maine and is the owner of Maine Photography Inc., a business that has been in existence for last 20 years.  Chris started taking photographs in 1984 with numerous road trips across the country. With a zest for adventure, the 35mm camera became a natural companion for exploring national parks, … while engaging in windsurfing, hiking, rock and ice climbing and mountain biking.  He started making panorama photographs in 2000 using specialize medium format film cameras. The panorama image provides a natural field of view angle similar to that of the eyes.   Chris has always been a “jack of all trades” in photography as he is not only self-taught in camera techniques, but also developed fine art printing production skills. Chris incorporated “gorilla marketing” techniques which drove his photography into a solid business.  Some years he has produced upwards 8,000 prints.

Chris has been in many publications, including cover image of Downeast Magazine and others. He has been hired by the State of Maine to promote tourism throughout the years.  Chris works as consultant for businesses, hotels, and private homeowners to enhance art décor and design in building environments.   His portfolio can be viewed at: www.mainephotography.com

Lastly, both Chris and Darylann (along with several other photographer friends) have given back to the local community by starting www.shutterbugs4charity.org   This group raises funds by selling photography-based products and giving the proceeds to grass roots organizations and people who can use support.  To date they have raised over $200,000 in last few years.

What to Expect:

The workshop will kick off on Friday June 10 in the evening with a meet and greet at 6 p.m. dinner (restaurant to be determined) followed by our first sunset shoot if timing and conditions allow. Saturday morning, we will meet 30-45 minutes before sunrise to get in position and take advantage of the best light. After shooting in one location for about an hour, we will move on to a second, and sometimes third location. We will then stop for breakfast together. After breakfast there will be a break to have time to rest, charge batteries and download your images. We will then reconvene for class time in our large 28’x32’ photo studio located in in Scarborough.

Discussions on photo techniques, review images, and time allocation to answer any questions you may have about certain techniques or processing challenges.  Next, a late lunch/early dinner together. Then back out into the field to shoot through sunset.  Sunday morning, we will meet to shoot sunrise and then enjoy breakfast together.  The workshop will conclude with a final class to review images and answer any questions from the field, in post progressing, review of taught techniques, and suggested next lessons in photography.

We will build an itinerary that will be shared via email a day or two prior to your arrival, and finalized at our meet and greet kick off dinner.  To make the most of this workshop we will be closely monitoring and evaluating weather patterns.  The weather will likely play a role in our locations for each sunrise and sunset.  The Itinerary is a tentative schedule and subject to change.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I need a lot of experience or expensive gear to take this workshop?
No. You can make great images right away with simple equipment, and that’s what these workshops aim to teach you. If you have photographed before and aim to update yourself on the latest techniques in digital photography, this is for you. If you are just starting out and have a new camera you want to learn, this is for you, too. If you are a seasoned veteran who doesn’t need much help, just wants to go to great locations and have fun with like-minded individuals, well, this is for you, as well! You will need a basic DSLR camera and a tripod, but you don’t need a lot of fancy gear. We’ve put together a list of recommended accessories.
What about transportation?

Participants are responsible for their own transportation.

What about lodging?
Maine is a popular place and many hotels and B&B’s fill up fast. We ask that you stay close to our predetermined morning meet-up location.  We will attach a list of suggestions once registered.

What should I wear?
The most recommended piece of gear is a pair of sturdy shoes. We walk across the hard and angular rocks in many of these locations, so hiking shoes are very helpful. We also like to layer for cool mornings and the head of the day, which usually means a base layer of synthetic, fast-wicking material, and a warm fleece or soft shell. Other suggested items are found below.

  •  Insect and Tick Repellant

  •  Sunscreen

  •  A hat for sun protection

  •  Rubber Boots (not absolutely necessary,
but there may be mud or wading in some locations)

  •  Appropriate waterproof rain gear

  •  Warm outer clothing

  •  Headlamp (flashlight)

Should I be concerned about ticks?
Yes. All outdoor activities in New England carry some risk of exposure to ticks. We recommend bringing bug repellant to use in the field as well as checking for ticks at night. Please use bug repellent that you can apply to your skin, or even better, permethrin, which you apply to clothes you plan on wearing in the field. Also, give yourself an extensive review when you get home at night to check for ticks.

What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?
We really believe that bad weather is good weather to landscape photographers! Sometimes this is when you can capture your most dramatic and impactful images! We want to teach you how to shoot in all conditions!

What does my tuition cover?
The price of the workshop includes all fieldwork, group instruction, and individual tutoring.
It does not include travel, travel insurance, meals, transportation (we recommend carpooling to locations), and lodging.

·Should I bring a laptop?
Yes. We recommend you bring your laptop to follow along during classroom time and to take notes. We also recommend you bring a card reader so that we can share and critique your photos if you’d like.  It is helpful to have Photoshop and/or Lightroom downloaded to your laptop but not a requirement.

What camera equipment do you recommend I bring?

  •    DSLR or mirrorless camera

  •    Lenses to cover any range from 16-200mm are recommended.
Best landscape range is anything in 16mm -70 mm.

  •    A card reader if your laptop doesn’t have one built-in,
extra camera batteries, extra memory cards.

  •    A sturdy tripod and head

  •   Circular polarizing filter
